The Facilities
Staunton Cattle Ranch State Park is Colorado’s latest State Park and opened up in 2013 offering 18 miles of treking tracks and a selection of various other entertainment tasks. The park sits south of Black Mountain in a location of pine forests, aspen groves, open fields and granite high cliffs. The site was once a 1,720-acre cattle ranch possessed by Drs. Archibald and Rachel Staunton who homesteaded the land beginning in the turn of the 20th century. The family ran a ranch and a turn-of-the-century saw mill on the home and held summertime camps for kids.
A few of my favorite routes are the Marmot Passage and Bugling Elk Routes. These can be integrated right into a 3.1-mile loop that ends at lovely Elk Falls Pond. It’s a wonderful mix for those wanting to experience a good amount of the park without overdoing it on range.
